The Plaza Mayor draws millions of tourists every year and is one of Madrid’s most famous attractions.

It may not be a piece of architectural art, but the Plaza Mayor is a great place to experience the friendly atmosphere of Madrid. Highly popular amongst tourists and Spanish residents, the Plaza is a great spot to come together with the many citizens of this nation.

Founded thousands of years before, the Plaza Mayor formed its estimated recent form in 1790 following the last fire that took place. Political debates, bullfights, beheadings and festivals have all taken place in the The Plaza Mayor which was widely used as a public gathering. To make your adventure into this piece of Madrid’s locale more exciting, a little history lesson before arriving would be well worth it.

Holding up to 50,000 people at one time, squaring off at around 100m on each of it’s sides, it doesn’t seem to be on such a large scale. It’s often crowded, particularly so in the summer months. It still holds festivals throughout the year too and those are good times to visit it if you want to have a true Spanish experience.

Restaurants, cafes, and bars are abound if you want to sit down and have lunch or dinner, or if you just want to relax with a drink for a while. Not to mention all of the traditional Spanish foods which can be found at a reasonable price. There are also numerous shops around to look around where you can buy souvenirs of your visit.

Boasting great a great view to watch the event below, the surrounding buildings are accessible to enhance the experience. These spots are most definitely worth the time and effort to reach, as you will be able to get above and away from the chaos and stress of being present in a large crowd, thus enabling you to have a better chance at watching the events taking place below.
